State of Internet Freedom in Ghana – 2021

Ghana is making impressive strides in internet connectivity.  In January 2021, Ghana’s internet penetration rate reached 50% with cumulated mobile connections of 41,690 000 from four telecom companies for an estimated population of 31,400,000 people.

While the country is inching up to the global average of 62% penetration rate, issues of creeping intolerance of critical publications on the internet; activities of cybercriminals and other deviants to exploit internet users; inequality of access to the internet between urban and rural segments of the population; and digital gender gap are some of the barriers hampering many Ghanaians from fully benefiting from the opportunities the internet offers.
