GPU Reviews, Validates Fundraising Strategy

The executive board, staff and affiliates of Gambia Press Union (GPU) on Friday, June 13th 2020, reviewed and validated a three – year fundraising strategy for the union.

The daylong review and validation workshop was held at TANGO Conference Hall in Bakau where participants observed social distancing in their sitting arrangement. Face masks and hand sanitizers were also used as Covid-19 precautionary measures. “The development of the fundraising strategy would go a long in helping the union to mobilise the much needed resources to sustain the office and implement its activities,” he said. “In line with this strategic plan and as part of the project funded by the Civil Society Fund of Denmark, the GPU hired the services of a consultant to develop the manual currently under review,” he added.

The development of the strategy is part of a project funded by the Civil Society Fund of Denmark and co-implemented by the GPU and Gambia Media Support (GAMES), a Danish organisation that supports the Gambian media.

The objective of the project is to strengthen the Gambian media, including strengthening the institutional capacity of GPU, to play its ideal role in the country’s fragile democratic development and the transitional justice process.

The first draft of the document was submitted by the consultant for review by GPU.  The consultant then acted upon the feedback to finalise the draft which has now been reviewed and validated.

Sheriff Bojang Jr, president of the GPU, said one of the three key pillars of the Union’s 2019-2021 strategic plan is strengthening the institutional capacity of the secretariat, to make it more responsive and accountable to its members.

Lamin Jahateh, GPU programme manager, said the strategy would be used as a guide to strengthen the organization’s effort to effectively mobilize resources to implement its programmes.
