Liberia’s 2023 elections: Fears, hopes amidst test of democratic resilience

Liberia goes to the polls on October 10, 2023, in a general election that will be a stern test of the country’s fledgling post-war democratic rebound. The run-up to the campaigns has been characterised by acts of violence, threats and an infection of bad temper. There are concerns about the safety of journalists covering the process while the media itself, especially those politically aligned, have also come in for criticism for its highly partisan coverage.

In this report, the MFWA’s programme lead for Freedom of expression, Muheeb Saeed looks at the various incidents that have shaped the October 10 polls into a stress test of Liberia’s democracy.
