Police Assault Journalist Covering Brutal Crackdown on Student demonstrators

The police have assaulted a journalist working for the news website Senego while he was covering violent clashes between students and security officers at the Universite Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar on May 15, 2018.

Ankou Sodjago was filming and streaming the violence on Senego’s Facebook page when a police officer seized the phone he was using. When he showed his press card and requested that the phone be returned, two police officers hit him in the head. The journalist came out of the assault with a swollen head and back pains.

The MFWA is concerned about the police brutalities against Sodjago who was carrying out his legitimate duties and students embarking on lawful protests. We call on the Senegales authorities to investigate the assault and punish the perpetrators.
