GPU, UNESCO build capacity of journalists on fact-checking

The Gambia Press Union (GPU) in partnership with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) organised a 3-day training for 30 journalists on fact-checking. The three-day capacity building event was held at Seaview Garden Hotel in Kokoli from Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 July 2021.

In his speech, Mr Muhammed S. Bah, Vice President of Gambia Press Union, indicated that the GPU recognises that misinformation and disinformation are becoming a norm in our national political discourse especially on social media platforms and is committed to building the capacity of journalists on fact-checking to ensure crucial watchdog role the media plays during the electoral process continue.

The event enhanced the capacity of journalists in detecting fake news, misinformation, and disinformation around general issues and especially on elections. With these skills, journalists will produce and share credible fact-checked content to fight the menace of misinformation and disinformation in the Gambia.
