Richard Kwadwo Nyarko is a journalist with the Multimedia Group Limited in Ghana. His story “Using Stones as Mouse in ICT Classes” was adjudged the best report in the Telecommunications and ICT Reporting Category. The story revealed the harsh reality of Ghana’s education system, particularly the learning of ICTs in basic schools in the rural communities.
The story detailed the plight of pupils of Assin Asamankese basic school in the Central Region of Ghana where despite learning ICT for years they had never seen a computer. Teachers used stones to teach pupils how a computer mouse works. The story received the attention of the First Lady of Ghana, the Ministry of Communications, other institutions and individuals who donated laptops and computers to the school.
