IPC to Hold Media Roundtable In Commemoration of UN International Day to End Impunity For Crimes Against Journalists

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria shall be joining the global movement of media groups to mark the 2016 edition of the United Nation’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, on Wednesday November 2, 2016.

According to the Director of IPC, Lanre Arogundade, the event is being organized under the auspices of the Nigerian Journalists Safety Initiative (NJSI) which is supported by the Open Society Foundation (OSF) towards facilitating a free and safe environment for journalists and other media professionals in Nigeria.

“The International Press Centre shall be commemorating the day with a media roundtable to draw attention of media and institutional stakeholders to addressing the impunity of attack and assault of journalists. Indications from our media monitoring and Journalists safety help desk shows that journalists in Nigeria are continually subjected to various forms of attacks, mostly in the course of their professional duty” Arogundade said.

“Pursuant to the above, the media roundtable shall have panel and interactive discussion on the roles of media stakeholders, security agencies and government functionaries in ensuring the protection of the rights and safety of journalists. In this regard, the roundtable shall have guest contributions from the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mrs. Funke Egbemode and representatives of the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy as well as the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, including contributions from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos, top media professionals journalists, editors and media support groups”.

The event, which shall hold at the IPC hall, Lagos shall be interactive as there would be a question and answer session involving the participants physically present as well as those following on twitter and other social media channels under the hashtag: #safetyofjournalistsng
